Reader Discussion Guide
A few ideas to jump start your book club discussion
- There are three main characters, Crossing Guard, Keyvon and Charlene. Who did you most identify with and why?
- Keyvon’s parenting style was different from GranPops, and he struggled with his father’s overbearing tendencies. Keyvon wanted to make his own choices. Have you had similar issues in your own life with a parent or child? Would you have taken your child to the Puppet Slam if you were in Keyvon’s shoes?
- Crossing planned to take Patrice to the afterlife, but other than knowing he’d become a human, he had no idea what Patrice’s afterlife would entail. What do you suspect the afterlife will look like?
- Kitsune was tasked with seeding more humanity into humans. Would you like to have that job? What would be the benefits? The drawbacks?
- Charlene’s damaged heart was removed from her body and replaced with someone else’s organ. A new heart that had lived with entirely different experiences up to that point. What would that be like? What would you wonder about if you were Charlene? Or if you were Charlene’s significant other?
- Charlene had an insecure childhood—and was put in foster care for a year. She now lived a stable life with her own home, loving family, affluent lifestyle. She was CEO of her own small business. What did you think of her reluctance to jeopardize that security by hiding things from her husband?
